Aldo Moro was a close personal friend and former student of my Grandfather , mathematics Professor Domenico Frisini. All the Moro family were friends of my mother and her family, whom they grew up with as next door neighbours in Bari, Puglia in the 1930s and 1940’s.

The story of Moro’s murder has occupied Italian politics continuously since 1978. Here is one of the few English language links to that intrigue, kidnap and murder in the years named ‘gli anni che scottavano’..or  ‘the years which scalded’.

Bulgaria’s Zhivkov Blamed for Assassination Attempt on Enrico Berlinguer in 1973

Bulgaria is involved in the unsuccessful attempt on the life of an Italian Communist leader, two Italian journalists claim.

Giovanni Fasanella and Corrado Incerti presented Wednesday in Rome their documentary book on the attempted assassination of Enrico Berlinguer, General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party from 1972 to 1984.
The journalists blame the unsuccessful attempt on Berlinguer’s life in Bulgaria in 1973 on the country’s communist leader Todor Zhivkov, who was overthrown in 1989.
Their book, titled “Sofia, 1973. Berlinguer deve morire ” (Berlinguer Must Die), is already available in Italian bookstores. It contains witness accounts and revelations.Fasanella and Incerti state that by opposing the Soviet invasion in Czechoslovakia in 1968 and the foreign policy of the other countries in the Communist block Berlinguer presented an inconvenience to the Socialist International.
